Are you wondering who am I? How do I find myself? What is my identity?
If you are at a place and time in your life that you are prompted to ask yourself these questions, let me say, you are not the first and certainly not the last. We all may ask ourselves this question at some point and I hope this blog post will help and give clarity.
There are many reasons for an identity crisis. Maybe people told you that you where no good, maybe you don’t know who your parents are, or perhaps life’s struggles have left you a little lost in yourself. There are many reasons. The fact is your identity will be who you choose to be, and not who people say you are. Let me state, I’m not talking about your name when I refer to who you are,but instead, I’m talking about your heart, your will, your spirit, or should I say, the very essence of who you are.
The Educational blunder…
It is no wonder to me these days why some people have identity issues. It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. With the education systems we are expected to adhere to, it only sets us up for wondering about this thing we all have called life. To say to a child we came from an ape is quite comedic. What a contradiction to try and instill confidence in the youth of tomorrow but at the same time tell them that their ancestors came from apes and there is gorilla DNA in their blood.
Yes there are a few people in the world that weren’t blessed with Brad Pitt or Jennifer Aniston looks, but really, how can we begin to believe we came from apes. Now don’t get me wrong on this, I do love the movie Planet of the Apes, but it must be said that this movie is under the fiction section. How can we still facilitate such studies of evolution when we don’t have hard pressed proof. Well without getting into a debate on evolution, my point is simple.
Don’t tell people they come from apes, don’t tell people they have no spirit, and you might find “identity issues” could decline somewhat.
To find ones identity…
To find your identity is a journey that we are all on and it goes by the name “life”. Who we are is discovered over time. The Bible for a start tells us we are loved by God and He has a plan for our lives. Jeremiah 29:11 for those Bible scholars out there.
The fact is to find your identity is by looking in the mirror and saying “this is me”. You are who you are. We can better ourselves, learn new skills, find out where we are from geographically, but the reality is you can be who you choose to be.
How do you find out who or what the best “Me” is.
It will be decided by:
- what you choose to learn and train yourself
- the people you hang around with
- the passions you pursue
- the moral code you choose to follow
- your belief/faith
It takes time, and in our lives we may meet people who will volunteer their opinions of who they think we are, but at the end of the day, you are who you choose to be, and not what people say you are. Some people try to be like other people, and this can be helpful if they follow a good role model, but you have your own identity, so learning from somebody is good, but remember, you are not them.
Others will graze off their parents successes and try to claim it as their own, and they may never discover who they really are. Then again there are people who cannot stand their parents and try to be the complete opposite of what they experienced from their parents. Either way, your parents can play a large influence on your life, but they cannot decide who you are, you must be true to yourself and be who you were meant to be.
The fact is still the same, you will be who you choose to be, and its a process.
The best way to be the best you in my opinion is as follows:
- Pursue your passions, not a paycheck
- Believe in God and pray to Him
- Have a moral code based on the New Testament, things like, “treat others as you would like to be treated”
- Enjoy your life and do what you love to do
- Go with your gut instinct when it comes to choices
- Live, Love, and laugh
