So here is a title that may get you a little confused. Often we think to love God is religious? Religion has messed up a lot of things in the world we live in today. It has been the cause of wars, murder, revenge, and hate. People will kill each other based off their religious beliefs.
To explain what I mean I have to take this opportunity to show you what the word “religion” actually means.
Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary traces the word back to an old Latin word religio meaning “taboo, restraint.” A deeper study discovers the word comes from the two words re and ligare. Re is a prefix meaning “return,” and ligare means “to bind;” in other words, “return to bondage.”
In that book we all know as the Bible, the message is clear that through believing in Jesus Christ (Romans 10:9,10) we can enter into a relationship with God. This being said, what healthy relationship ever contained bondage or restraint? Nobody wants that, and neither does God. He loves us and wants us to live in freedom just like it says in 2 Corinthians 3:17(NLT) For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Doesn’t it say of how God is our Father and He loves us so much He sent His Son to save us? Why do people in today try and control and restrain people to man made traditions? For me if it aint in the Bible, it was brought about by man, so I have a choice whether or not I want not conform. However God does give us rules and guidelines, like love God and love your neighbour. These aren’t to control they are to protect.
When we think of God, the perspective I have is He is my dad. Any guidelines or rules he sets down are for His benefit and mine.
Its like when a dad says to a teenager don’t hang out with those guys cause they might lead you into trouble. The teenager hates it cause he likes the guys and they are his friends but if he disobeys his dad it ultimately leads to trouble for him and his dad.
The fact is God loves us and has given us the Holy Spirit and the Bible to help live a good life. Church is also a blessing to help us navigate through life by hearing teaching and celebrating God with others. God also uses people to support us on our journey. But God doesn’t want to control us, He wants to love us and for us to love him. Its all quite simple really. Religion complicates it.
